En 1074, Guillaume de Cherves conc\u00e9da l’\u00e9glise Saint-Vivien \u00e0 l’abbaye auvergnate d’Ebreuil-sur-Sioule et l’unit au prieur\u00e9 Saint-L\u00e9ger de Cognac qui d\u00e9pendait de cette m\u00eame abbaye. L’influence du possesseur se manifeste dans l’architecture. Ici, c’est l’emploi d’une file de coupoles. Face aux menaces de la guerre de Cent ans, de nombreuses \u00e9glises de la r\u00e9gion furent l’objet d’am\u00e9nagements d\u00e9fensifs. L’\u00e9glise servait \u00e0 la fois de refuge pour les habitants et de tour de guet. La nef de Saint-Vivien subit ces transformations : les murs goutterots furent sur\u00e9lev\u00e9s et des ouvertures furent pratiqu\u00e9es dans la ma\u00e7onnerie. La r\u00e9gularit\u00e9 avec laquelle ces ouvertures se succ\u00e8dent, confirme l’hypoth\u00e8se de l’existence d’un chemin de ronde sous les combles. En 1736-1737, l’\u00e9glise fut restaur\u00e9e et un grand presbyt\u00e8re fut construit perpendiculairement au mur sud. En 1863, une tribune fut mise en place au fond de la nef, au-dessus de l’entr\u00e9e. L’\u00e9difice appartient \u00e0 la s\u00e9rie des \u00e9glises saintongeaises \u00e0 nef unique, couvertes d’une file de coupoles. Trois larges coupoles semi-sph\u00e9riques sur pendentifs y d\u00e9limitent des trav\u00e9es s\u00e9par\u00e9es par des arcs doubleaux \u00e0 double ressauts qui retombent sur des colonnes \u00e0 dosserets aux chapiteaux tr\u00e8s sobres. Ceux-ci re\u00e7oivent \u00e9galement les arcs formerets encadrant des fen\u00eatres romanes sans d\u00e9coration. A la nef succ\u00e8de une abside semi-circulaire vo\u00fbt\u00e9e en cul de four. L’arc triomphal repose sur trois colonnes. En plan, l’\u00e9glise poss\u00e8de une absidiole nord dont la trav\u00e9e droite abrite une petite salle carr\u00e9e, vo\u00fbt\u00e9e d’une coupole sur pendentifs avec trou \u00e0 cloches. C’est la base du clocher qui s’ouvre sur la nef au niveau de la troisi\u00e8me trav\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de l’ouest. La chapelle lat\u00e9rale sud date de 1873.
