F\u00caTE DU BX G\u00c9RARD, FONDATEUR DE L’ORDRE DE MALTE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le fondateur et premier Grand Ma\u00eetre de l\u2019Ordre est n\u00e9 vers 1040 \u00e0 Scala, \u00e0 quelques kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019Amalfi, en Italie du sud. Dans la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XI\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, il se rend \u00e0 J\u00e9rusalem o\u00f9 il commence \u00e0 travailler \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital li\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9glise de Santa Maria Latina, pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment construite par les marchands d\u2019Amalfi pour accueillir les p\u00e8lerins et soigner les malades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selon la l\u00e9gende, en 1099, pendant le si\u00e8ge de J\u00e9rusalem par les chr\u00e9tiens, Fr\u00e8re G\u00e9rard leur jetait du pain depuis les murailles, mais quand il fut d\u00e9couvert, le pain se transforma en pierres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour renforcer l\u2019institution qu\u2019il dirigeait, Fr\u00e8re G\u00e9rard la transforma en un ordre religieux d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Saint Jean-Baptiste. Le 15 f\u00e9vrier 1113, le Pape Pascal II reconna\u00eet officiellement la communaut\u00e9 monastique des Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de J\u00e9rusalem. Le document du Pape donne une indication du r\u00f4le et de l\u2019importance du fondateur de l\u2019Ordre et met en \u00e9vidence l\u2019importance du service offert aux p\u00e8lerins et aux pauvres dans l\u2019h\u00f4pital de J\u00e9rusalem. Il fournit \u00e9galement une liste des h\u00f4pitaux et centres de soins en France et en Italie, qui d\u00e9montre comment l\u2019Ordre constitu\u00e9 par Fr\u00e8re G\u00e9rard \u2013 quelques d\u00e9cennies apr\u00e8s sa fondation \u2013 ne se limite pas au seul royaume latin de J\u00e9rusalem, mais il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 une dimension europ\u00e9enne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr\u00e8re G\u00e9rard meurt \u00e0 J\u00e9rusalem le 3 septembre 1120. Ses orientations et son exemple ont constitu\u00e9 la base de la premi\u00e8re r\u00e8gle \u00e9crite de l\u2019Ordre, \u00e9manant de Fr\u00e8re Raymond de Puy \u2013 deuxi\u00e8me Grand Ma\u00eetre \u2013 entre 1145 et 1153.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00c9glise catholique le consid\u00e8re Bienheureux et c\u00e9l\u00e8bre sa f\u00eate le 13 octobre.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
