Pour une petite ville comme Saint-Claud, la taille du b\u00e2timent est importante. Il faut noter que celui-ci a un double usage, \u00e9glise de monast\u00e8re et \u00e9glise paroissiale. Cette ambivalence fut cause de tracas, de proc\u00e8s m\u00eame. Le baron de La Rochefoucauld et le comte d\u2019Angoul\u00eame de la famille des Valois particip\u00e8rent de cette restauration, marquant ainsi le d\u00e9cor du nouvel \u00e9difice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/charente.catholique.fr\/est-charente\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/09\/1461ffe963ebeda1-8bbcf.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/charente.catholique.fr\/est-charente\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/09\/1461ffe963ebeda1-8bbcf.jpg 500w, https:\/\/charente.catholique.fr\/est-charente\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/09\/1461ffe963ebeda1-8bbcf-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>La crypte date \u00e9galement de cette \u00e9poque. Petite \u00e9glise semi-enterr\u00e9e, elle accueillait la d\u00e9votion \u00e0 Saint-Claud et fut orn\u00e9e de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re que l\u2019\u00e9glise haute. Mais lors des guerres de religion, la majorit\u00e9 des d\u00e9cors furent martel\u00e9s.<br>Si la R\u00e9volution fran\u00e7aise \u00e9pargna le b\u00e2timent, il n\u2019en est pas de m\u00eame pour le mobilier liturgique. Les familles ais\u00e9es de Saint-Claud aid\u00e8rent au remplacement de celui-ci, comme cela est visible sur les armoiries des vitraux (actuellement en cours de restauration).<br>Au XIXe si\u00e8cle, ce sont les comptes-rendus de travaux et de chantiers qui nous permettent de conna\u00eetre l\u2019histoire de l\u2019\u00e9glise. La r\u00e9paration du clocher et des toits a occup\u00e9 toute l\u2019\u00e9poque, jusqu\u2019en 1905, date du nouveau clocher. Il a m\u00eame fallu lever un imp\u00f4t extraordinaire pour faire face \u00e0 ces d\u00e9penses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/charente.catholique.fr\/est-charente\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/09\/f0c334541dc058fe-75fd7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui encore, les travaux de restauration sont d\u2019actualit\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s une mise hors d\u2019eau, ce sont les ma\u00e7onneries et les vitraux qui sont concern\u00e9s.
